Mongol (2007) - Review

Plot : The story recounts the early life of Genghis Khan who was a slave before going on to conquer half the world including Russia in 1206.

Review : I purchased this on DVD early November 2009, and that's me just finally got round to watching it. This was a film I missed in the cinema, and a few folk told me it was really good.

The film has a very grand and epic look to it, especially the battle scenes.

It was interesting to see the different culture and how they chose their wife's etc, as this was my first DVD that shows Mongolian history and culture as the rest are Chinese, Japanese or Korean films.

Everything about this film just worked, the camera work, the costumes, the fight scenes the actors everything blended very well together and pulled you into this period and also made you feel for the characters which not a lot of Asian or historical films do.

It was visually stunning and entertaining, when people go to see this or watch this the fearsome Genghis Khan as we have been told is not the one they will see in this film as he shows compassion plus his love for family and his children.

Overall the film was very well paced, and enjoyable to watch. I would recommend this film to anyone who likes Asian films, or historic style films. My only disappointment was that when it ended you were told about his later conquests, where I would like to see a sequel and see it on screen with the same actors.

Daybreakers (2009) - Review

Plot : In the year 2019, a plague has transformed most every human into vampires. Faced with a dwindling blood supply, the fractured dominant race plots their survival; meanwhile, a researcher works with a covert band of vamps on a way to save humankind.

Review : I am a big fan of Vampire films, so i was very excited to see how this film took on the Vampire mythology.

The film for me was just ok, there was nothing that I could say I really enjoyed watching or was new to see. The pace of the film for me was good at the start then from half way point to the end the pace sort of slowed down for me.

The fright scenes where they were added to make you jump, they were so obvious you could see the coming plus you could tell what was going to happen from scene to scene so this was very disappointing.

Overall I was disappointed with the film, there was so much potential for a great action vampire film but it lacked a lot. The only good part to this film is that it had a lot of good and well known actors.

Would I recommend this?…I would wait for TV if I was you.

Avatar (3D) (2009) - Review

Visual : 3D

Plot : A paraplegic marine dispatched to the moon Pandora on a unique mission becomes torn between following his orders and protecting the world he feels is his home.

Review : This was my 1st 3D film, and to be honest I was expecting things just to keep flying out at me i.e. over the top, also expecting it to look very cheap and not very well done..I couldn't have been more wrong.

To start with the plot of the film is very basic, we have seen it all before but due to its look and special FX you manage to ignore this and enjoy the film from start to end.

For the Na'vi it uses a lot of culture references and blends them in to one, for me this was very interesting to see as you did recognise a lot of the styles and this is probably why I enjoyed the film as much as I did.

The special FX are amazing, you are instantly drawn in to this world that is lush with life, colour and depth and the combination of this just pulls you in more and more.

Overall the film is really good and defiantly worth seeing in 3D, the 3D is subtle and works very well and doesn't distract you from the film and story.

Nine (2009) - Review

Plot : Famous film director Guido Contini struggles to find harmony in his professional and personal lives, as he engages in dramatic relationships with his wife, his mistress, his muse, his agent, and his mother.

Review : I went to this filming only going by what I had seen in the trailer, so I thought it was a story with a show rather than a musical.

The film isn't very well paced, as you do feel at parts it drags and you just wish it would hurry to the next scene. Its not your normal Musical as there is 90% talking and the other 10% is the singing and dancing scenes.

The visual look to the film is good, especially when these Musical scenes happen. The costumes, the lighting and camera work is great for these shots, though the down side is the music isnt that great. The only song that stands out is the one that stands out and is the best is "Be Italian" sung by Fergie and used in the trailer.

Overall it wasn't the worst film/musical but it could have been a lot better. I think due to having a good cast, you expected it to feel grander and have better songs. I didnt dislike the film, it just could have been a lot better paced, and have a lot better music.
