In March 2007 I started playing Second Life, and used my experiences in SL to help The Association for International Cancer Research (AICR). AICR are one of CC Technology’s web clients. They asked us to help them gain a Second Life presence and try to raise awareness of their charity within the game.
2007
The first step for AICR within SL was to set up a shop. I chose the Scotland sim for a location, a logical place since AICR are based in Scotland in real life. Inside the shop I created several posters with information about AICR, cancer etc. Later I created a number of AICR-branded t-shirts and put them on sale within the shop.
My second step was to create a donation wishing well and place this on several sims or inside shops, with the owners’ permission. This has been very successful and has raised a good amount of donations.
To help better promote AICR within SL I decided to put on several events. I wanted events that had a lot of user interaction and were also fun. I came up with the Win a Date auction, in which users put themselves up for auction and other users bid on them to win a one-hour date. There are rules to follow, for example no sex or nudity, the date is just for fun and to help a good cause. In turn the user is getting an enjoyable experience and also helping a good cause at the same time.
The first auction was held on the Scotland sim and lasted for two hours, and had 14 users. The event raised a lot more than I expected to raise, and everyone enjoyed themselves. I got lots of requests for another auction so I started to organise a second event. This was held three weeks after the first and again lasted just over two hours and had 7 more candidates than the first. What’s more, we doubled the amount raised.
On the 7th of November Mark Lock, a friend within Second Life and a past AICR auction candidate, contacted me and said he would like to hold an event for AICR. This event would include the very popular Win a Date auction followed by several live bands. Since this is our third auction I wanted to try and make this the biggest one yet, so my first goal was to gather a lot more candidates.
This auction had 20 girls and 20 guys up for auction, plus it had been promoted a lot more than the previous events. A lot more posters had been set up and a lot more users are informing their friends about the event. There were several live acts performing after the auction. This event raised a grand total of £810, the most raised at any of AICR's events to date.
On the 1st December work started on the first AICR sim, this was the most amount of work I had ever done in Second Life. There was a lot of planning involving the contents and look of the island, I wanted this island to look as good as possible. At the start of January the islands look started to take shape and I could see my ideas coming to life, the island already had the wow factor. The island would include an information area, fashion area, shopping area, a club, beach area and 25 villas to rent, where all rental money would go to AICR.
2008
On the 1st February 2008 the island opened to the public and the opening night was a massive success, a large turn out and nearly two thirds of the villas were rented. Most of the villas on the island have already been rented, and only a very small amount remain free. From the 1st February 2008 on wards I will be trying to hold several events a year, and get bands/singers etc. to play at the club.
On the 14th June 2008 I held the 4th AICR Win A Date auction, this was held on the AICR island at Club AICR. There were 20 candidates up for auction, and after the auction there was an after party. The event managed to raise a total of £440 which is going to help aid cancer research.
I am also DJn within Secondlife under the name “Tenknation”, the aim of this is to give users a fun time and listening to cool tunes while promoting AICR.
At present I am working on a big project for AICR to start in March 2009, this project is called AICR'S Big Blast. The idea is to create a fun event for users, and also help a good cause in the process. I have 31 clubs that are going to hold a one day event in sl, on one day in March to help promote AICR within SL. During the last two days in February, there will be a 2 day event to lead up to the March events.
2009
2009 started off with a big music event, a MySpace band were performing live in Oxford and AICR asked if they could attend and stream it into Secondlife. The band is called the Winchell Riots, and said yes so 4 avatars were created, Jack went to Oxford and started streaming. This event was very sucessful and users loved this idea, and loved the band.
In February 27th we started AICR's Big Blast, this involved 2 days in February (27th and 28th) with events and also from the 1st of Match till the 31st one club a night held an event I.e. DJ, Singer or both and for how long they liked. This is a 1st for any charity within Secondlife to do this, and it was a MASSIVE hit with users and clubs and raised the largest amount to date for AICR.
At the start of October AICR launched their second island, this sim was for land rental and on the opening day 60% of the plots were taken instantly.
At the end of October 2009 a new project from AICR, the AICR Radio Show. This radio show will cross the gap between reallife and secondlife, users will be able to listen from ingame or from reallife. The show will include music, chat, competitions (reallife and secondlife prizes) a first for anyone within Secondlife. The shows hosts will be myself and my best friend Chris (Balthier Dagostino).
2010
The first big event in 2010 is the AICR Big Blast 2010, I am trying to get the same amount of clubs as last year (around 30).
